Holiday Events in Raleigh with Kids

At our Raleigh 5-star preschool, we know how hectic and crazy the holiday season can be. Trying to fit in activities as well as shopping, baking, and just day to day life can be difficult, but we also know you don’t want your family to miss out on the magic of the season. To help you plan your month, we’re sharing some fun holiday activities for kids in Raleigh. 

75th Annual Raleigh Christmas Parade

When: Saturday, November 23rd, 9:30 A.M.

Where: Begins on Hillsborough Street at St. Mary’s Street

Raleigh holiday events for families The Greater Raleigh Merchants Association and Shop Local Raleigh are sponsoring the 75th Annual Raleigh Christmas Parade! This 1.4 mile parade route usually lasts around two hours, and is the largest Christmas parade between Washington D.C. and Atlanta. With local marching bands, floats, area businesses, and a visit from Santa, it’s sure to get the family in a holiday spirit!  

North Hills Tree Lighting

When: Saturday, November 23rd, 3:30 – 7:30 P.M.

Where: 4191 Main at North Hills Street

Raleigh is definitely getting into the holiday spirit early this year! The annual tree lighting at North Hills is an afternoon and evening event that is free to the public and has plenty of activities for kids of all ages. During the afternoon, activities include:

  • Kids crafts
  • Snowy Yard Sledding Slopes
  • Trackless train rides
  • Bounce houses
  • Face painting and balloon crafts
  • Vendor village for snacks, drinks, and local shopping

These activities will definitely keep your toddler or preschooler from getting bored while they wait for Santa to arrive at 6:00 P.M. along with the tree lighting

Piper Lights 

When: November 29th – January 3rd, 5:30 – 9:00 P.M.

Where: 5725 Fixit Shop Road, Wake Forest

Piper Lights is a family-owned project that features an incredible drive-through light display that will enthrall adults and little ones alike. In addition to the drive through lights, there are train rides, an old-fashioned candy store, and even visits from Santa on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M.  The drive through display and train rides are free, though donations are appreciated to help fund this annual display. 

Santa’s Workshop

When: Saturday, December 7th: 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.

Where: Plantation Point Shopping Center, 6250 Plantation Center Drive, Raleigh

Plantation Point and Macaroni Kid is sponsoring Santa’s Workshop! You’ll want to get free tickets so you don’t miss out on the fun that includes: 

  • Crafts to make homemade gifts
  • Pictures with Santa
  • Fun in the snow
  • Donut buffet and hot chocolate bar

Plus, the first 100 children will get a free mini Christmas tree to decorate!

Holiday Open House and Live Nativity

When: Saturday, December 7th: 2:00 – 5:00 P.M.

Where: Lafayette Village, 8450 Honeycutt Road

Hosted by Bay Leaf Baptist Church, the holiday open house features trackless train rides, camel rides, and holiday shopping opportunities with local vendors. Also, the Live Nativity will be in place to provide a family-friendly portrayal of the meaning of Christmas. 

The Annual State Tree Lighting Ceremony

When: Thursday, December 12th: 5:00 – 7:30 P.M.

Where: Capitol Square: 1 E. Edenton Street; North Carolina Executive Mansion: 200 N. Blount Street

Take the family to Capitol Square for the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony! With music from the Raleigh Concert Band and the Wake Med Chorus, along with free cookies and hot chocolate from the Junior Woman’s Club and a visit from Santa, this is a festive, family friendly event! Plus, this time of year is the only time the Executive Mansion is open to the public without being a part of a tour, and you’ll get to see it in all of it’s holiday finery!

If you can’t be there for the tree lighting, the Executive Mansion will also be open on Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th from 10 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. and on Sunday, December 15th from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.  

Menorah Lighting & Gelt Drop 

When: Sunday, December 22nd, 2:30 – 4:30 P.M. 

Where: Lafayette Village, 8450 Honeycutt Road

Head to Lafayette Village to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah with Chabad Center of Raleigh at the Menorah Lighting and Gelt Drop! Donuts and hot drinks will be provided and at 3:30, the Grand Menorah will be lit as gelt, traditional gold-wrapped chocolates, are dropped.
