Fun & Free Events in Raleigh for Christmas Break

December 20, 2020

At our Raleigh 5-star preschool, we know how hectic and crazy the holiday season and the time between December 20th and January 4th is especially challenging. While we still need to practice safe choices due to COVID-19, there are still some fun holiday activities for kids in Raleigh to make the break fun and special, and we wanted to take an opportunity to highlight some favorites.

Piper Lights

When: November 27th – January 1st, 5:30 – 9:00 P.M.

Where: 5725 Fixit Shop Road, Wake Forest

Piper Lights is a family-owned project that features an incredible drive-through light display that will enthrall adults and little ones alike. Unfortunately, the candy shop and train rides are closed this year, but you can still enjoy the 7 acre light display.  The drive through display is free, though donations are appreciated to help fund this annual display.

StoryWalk® at Crowder Park

When: December 12th – January 16th, 8:00 A.M – 5:00 P.M.

Where: Crowder Park, 4729 Ten – Ten Road, Apex

If the weather is nice, head to Crowder Park for their interactive StoryWalk®. Located on the Outer Loop Trail, starting at the Bird Garden, they are highlighting the story “When Winter Comes” by Nancy Van Lann. Laminated pages from the book are posted along the path allowing you to walk in nature while reading a classic favorite!

Illuminate Art Walk

Where: Downtown Raleigh, beginning on Hargett Street

When: December 11th through January 8th

Bundle up with the family and head to Downtown Raleigh where local storefronts are transformed by beautiful, light-based art installations. Made by local artists, these pieces will brighten up a chilly winter night. Because it’s outdoors, it’s a safer option, especially when following social distancing and proper health etiquette, and it gives you an opportunity to support local businesses when you pop into a cafe along E Davie Street for a hot chocolate!

Christmas Carol Sing-a-long with the Choral Society of Durham

When: Sunday, December 20th, 4:00 – 5:30 P.M.

Where: The comfort of home

Join the Choral Society of Durham live for a Christmas Carol Sing-a-long. Online copies of the music will be provided, and you don’t have to be a great singer or know the tunes. Sign up at the link on their website and join together to sing and lift your voices in joy of the season.

Carolina Ballet’s The Nutcracker

When: December 25th, 7:00 P.M.

Where: The comfort of home on WRAL

Due to the ongoing challenges and dangers associated with indoor gatherings, a live performance of The Nutcracker from the Carolina Ballet will not be held. However, the are filming a special performance and broadcasting it through WRAL on Christmas night. Grab some snacks, put on your PJs and take in this classic ballet as a family.
