What is a 5 Star Child Care Rating?

September 19, 2012

In 1999, the Division of Child Development (DCD) began issuing star rated licenses to all eligible child care centers across North Carolina. The rating system is on a scale of 1 through 5, with 5 being the best. A rating of one star means that a child care program meets North Carolina’s minimum licensing standards for child care.

Programs that meet higher standards can apply for a two to five star license. The star rating is comprised of a facility’s scores in Staff Education and Program Standards.

The rating system helps parents find early education programs that are high quality. It also helps preschool teachers tell whether the quality of their programs meets high professional standards.
