Primary Beginnings Child Development Centers are proud to share their love of reading with their preschoolers. Throughout the month of February, each Raleigh preschool location will be promoting Library Lovers Month, influencing preschoolers to love books and reading while they are still young. Illiteracy is a growing concern these days, so its important to instill healthy reading habits while they are young.
Here are some ways you can share the loving of reading with your children at home:
Read a Book Together
Make it a habit to read a book with your children at night. Whether it’s a simple picture book or easy-to-read chapter book, reading together and out loud will begin teaching your children excellent listening and comprehension skills. You can make it fun for them by incorporating different voices for the characters or adding sounds to different actions that are happening in the story.
Go to the Library
Libraries offer great resources for children learning to read. The children’s section is flooded with books, games and puzzles all designed to help children grow and learn. Throughout the year, libraries put on special events to encourage reading, especially during the summer when school is out of session. Examples of these events can include a summer reading program, storytime, a book club, or even a family movie night. Check your local library for the latest monthly events.
Storytime is a great reading activity for your preschoolers. Usually sessions are held at local libraries or book stores and last about an hour. Children are introduced to different stories and characters, read aloud by someone who dresses up like a person in the tale. Not only is it helping their learning, comprehension and listening skills, but also allowing them to interact with other children.
